Barbara Walters tells all in her book Audition, a memoir revealed on Oprah during a heartfelt interview.
Barbara & Oprah shared affair secrets about the married men they were with during their lives. Oprah called Barbara a “mistress” which Barbara particularly didn’t like, but felt a bit better when Oprah confessed to the same with a married man.
Barbara surprisingly revealed that in all 3 marriages she entered into, she did so with a broken and heavy heart. Intuitively Barbara never felt the marriages would work out. A message Oprah immediately picked up on and suggested all women take heed to before hastily committing to man in marriage.
As the ladies discussed The View and some of the show’s downfalls, Barbara revealed some of the lies that were told in an attempt to cover Star Jones after her gastro-bypass surgery. Barbara mentioned the reason why Oprah has been so successful over the years despite her own problems has been because Oprah is honest and transparent, always telling the truth.
Barbara also discussed issues about The View’s Rosie O’Donnell and how she looked to Barbara as a mother, which was both good and sometimes trying considering the unrealistic expectations that accompanied that role for Barbara. The Donald Trump war of words was also mentioned, along with Barbara’s friendship and conflict resolution techniques in dealing with the matter.
Barbara said since she’s gotten old she isn’t going to be as good as an interviewer anymore because she is now far more affectionate, loving, and compassionate toward people. Barbara revealed that she originally thought to name her book “Sister” before giving it the name “Audition”, which Oprah curiously questioned how she came up with the title.
Barbara also spoke about her father’s suicide, he being a gambler and the owner of the Latin Quarter. Although Barbara and the family originally said for years their father had a heart attack, in actuality due to the stress of his indebtedness he committed suicide.
Barbara’s adopted daughter being 6′1″ in height has also had her own struggles, which Barbara devotes a chapter in her book to discuss her role as a mother.
The heartfelt interview was deeply moving, very touching, and quite inspiring.
