What is the best John Wayne biography book?

I have wanted to read a biography book and I want it to be about John Wayne, but there are so many out there about him. I want to know if anyone has read one if they could give me a suggestion on which one would be good. I really want to read about his life outside the movies. More about him and his personal self.

You may be interested in reading John Wayne, American by Randy Roberts and James S. Olson. See http://www.amazon.com/John-Wayne-American-Randy-Roberts/dp/0803289707/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1260744255&sr=8-1 for a description and some readers’ reviews.

I confess to not having read it yet, though I have a copy and it was highly recommended to me. From what I was told, it covers everything from the boy growing up to the man to the movie star, in a realistic not idealized way. Frankly, I purchased it because it sounded like the best one out there. In any case, read some of the description and reviews to see if it seems like the type of biography of John Wayne for which you are looking.

***Bit of trivia: John Wayne was awarded a Congressional Gold Medal in 1979 with just those title words – John Wayne, American – engraved on it.
