The Last Gunslinger(Odd Question)?
I have just finished up a summer film class and there is an odd question that has been preying on my mind. We saw the movie Taxi Driver and in our discussion our proffessor said that Travis Bickle could be veiwed as a man out of time on a hopeless quest. He then said Scorsese and the guy who wrote Taxi Driver (I forget the name) based this on the Searchers…well…here is the weird past…couldStephen King (a western fan) have consciously or unconsciously based Roland Deschain on Travis Bickle and John Waynes Character in the Searchers? Both are on a hopeless quest and both are in esssence murderers…..probably too much caffenine on my mind..but…its just something I thought about. Discuss..or make fun of me…either way I’m cool. Points will be rewarded based on best insult and/or answer. Thankee sai.
Stephen King has actually said that he based Roland and some of the settings in the series around the westerns that he watched.
Specifically Clint Eastwood. He did mention the Magnificent Seven, as one of the movies. ALso the Poem Childe to Roland… is where he first got the idea.
It is strange to see this post here, as I am currently re-reading the series for the 3rd time and am on book 7.
I wish this series could go on forever.
Perhaps he will write more concerning Roland’s early days.
Long days and pleasant nights!!

No Highway In The Sky [VHS] $19.98 A little-known gem, No Highway in the Sky is an interesting hybrid of U.S. and British film production. Most of the cast is British, as are the look and feel of the film, but the lead actor and the budget are both American. James Stewart plays aeronautical engineer Theodore Honey, the quintessential absent-minded professor: eccentric, forgetful, but brilliant. His studies show that the aircraft be… |

Pow Wow Highway [VHS] $14.99 Gary Farmer (Smoke Signals) is the standout in a fine film by Jonathan Wacks about an oversized Cheyenne man-child (Farmer) who decides to go on a spiritual quest, while simultaneously giving a ride to his lifelong Indian activist friend (A. Martinez). The film takes us through some pretty desolate Indian communities, but while Wacks makes a point of revealing harsher aspects of life on some reser… |

The Rescuers Down Under (Gold Collection) $19.99 No, this isn’t a quickie, direct-to-video sequel, cashing in on the success of the 1977 animated hit about adventurous mice, but a full-blown theatrical effort.
