In my years of experience, I witnessed website owners struggling to gain website top rankings. They do not understand a critical issue: “keyphrases”. Most believe that a keyphrase searched large number of times is good. For instance, a keyphrase searched 3,000 times a day in Google, Yahoo, and MSN combined is believed to be good. It may also be a headache using it to gain website top rankings.

Assuming you are one of those owners, a meaningful experience I had with two clients should give you a better understanding of how to conceive this vital issue.

Once upon a time, two ladies in Boulder, Colorado in the USA contacted me. They had a nice website, but not built with Search Engines in mind. My experience taught me that it is wasteful to invest efforts in optimizing existing web pages. However, there was another detrimental issue they confronted: very few surfers search for their otherwise beautiful Gift Baskets For Pets. I could have achieved top rankings for their website with my eyes closed.

Doing my keyphrase research, I discovered that about 2,400 times a day surfers in Google, Yahoo, and MSN combined typed in their browsers Puppy Names, Cat Names, Kitty Names, Boy Dog Names, Girl Dog Names, etc. They have one thing in common: Pets’ Names !

To gain top rankings for the ladies’ website, I determined that I should give surfers what surfers want: Pets’ Names.

I designed five web pages to allow full optimization. They also matched the website design and colors. Then, using the appropriate tools, I chose five important keyphrases and five slightly less important keyphrases. Each web page will be optimized for one “primary” and one “secondary”.

Pay attention to what comes next.

Using the Internet, I found pets’ names of people like Queen Elizabeth II, Frank Sinatra, John F. Kennedy, Winston Churchill, Ringo Starr, Sylvester Stalone, Bill Gates, John Wayne, Charles de Gaulle, Tiger Woods, General Paton, John Rockefeller III, Bob Hope, Celine Dion, Lucille Ball, and Arnold Schwarznegger just to mention some.

Then, I chose a primary keyphrase ~such as Boy Dog Names~ to create the web page Boy-Dog-Names.html and I dedicated that web page to show which celebrities gave which names to their “boy dogs”. Additionally, I created four web pages using the remaining four primaries and secondaries about Cat Names, Kitty Names, Girl Dog Names, etc.

After their website top rankings were achieved for the five optimized web pages, surfers arrived and found a captivating version of what they wanted: Pets’ Names from celebrities across the world.

However, at the bottom of each web page…

They also found a tastefully designed screen-wide graphic inviting them to click on it and to visit a splendid collection of Gifts Baskets For Pets. Since those days, my clients remain making sales; and I got a check for my fees.

“Put on your thinking cup” when it comes to select and how to use keyphrases to gain a website top rankings.
