Davy Crocketts hat. You know, the one with a tail on it.?
There’s a bit of an argument going on in our local quiz pub quiz as to what animal Davy Crockett has got stuck on the top of his head. We’ve got answers from anything from a rabbit to a gerbil. Any real American historian know the answer? Also can anyone confirm that he really did wear a hat of this kind or is that a myth too. I know John Wayne wore one in the film “The Alamo” but that could have been down to the costume department.
Davy Crockett wore a coonskin cap – as in raccoon.
The caps were originally a traditional Native American article of clothing, but when European pioneers began settling the Tennessee and Kentucky areas, they made it their own, evolving its use and wearing them as hunting caps.
The coonskin cap eventually became a part of the iconic image associated with American frontiersmen such as Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett. Boone did not actually wear coonskin caps, which he disliked, and instead wore felt hats.
