1. Battle of Anzio
2. An honorable man
3. His mentor, John Wayne
4. Gunsmoke fame
5. Art imitates real life
6. Sunshine loves you more than you’ll ever know.
When I was a kid, in the 1950’s and ’60’s, my family always made it a point to gather around our Zenith television set to watch the program “Gunsmoke.” It starred James Arness as Matt Dillon, a role that I have heard his mentor, John Wayne, assisted him in securing. The Dillon character was as honorable a man as Mr. Arness. Art imitates real life. The character Dillon was a brave and steady U.S. Marshall in Dodge City, Kansas, at a time when the west really was wild, and order was needed to make the world safe and habitable. In real life, Mr. Arness was a war hero, participating in the Battle of Anzio, and earning a Purple Heart for his bravery there. After the program went off the air in 1975, Mr. Arness had a few other roles, but he will forever be best known for his Gunsmoke fame. Arness and Dillon were part of the fabric of life in the ’50’s and ’60’s, establishing a standard of honesty, bravery, and clean living that served as an example for all of us baby boomers growing up at that time. Mr. Arness, happy birthday to you. My friend Sunshine loves you more than you’ll ever know.

Gunsmoke – The First Season $26.80 A TV series doesn’t get a more auspicious launch than did Gunsmoke, the first episode of which, broadcast on Sept. 10, 1955, was introduced by none other than John Wayne (”Some of you may have seen me before”).
