What’s you favorite John Wayne movie?
I like Rio Lobo, but probably The War Wagon is my favorite.
TRUE GRIT (1969)
This film won him a Best Actor Oscar, and he’s simply a wonderful old scoundrel in this one! Kim Darby is a match for him in all of the scenes. The cast is full of surprises, the locations are a far cry from Monument Valley, and the music is great, with a theme song that won the Best Original Song Oscar.
Everyone went to this movie! I didn’t know anyone who hadn’t been to the theater at least once. It definitely was a shared experience. There was no Generation Gap when it came to this film~which I certainly couldn’t say for “The Green Berets” from the year before!
Other films I love are:
Rooster Cogburn aka Rooster Cogburn & the Lady~John Wayne and Katharine Hepburn are such a great duo that it’s hard to believe that he never worked with her before. (At least, I don’t think they did.) I wasn’t the only one reminded of “The African Queen” although this one didn’t end up with a romance. I’m really surprised that Rooster didn’t crow in yet another film; he’s a great character, and John Wayne obviously enjoyed the role of the “fat old man”. *giggle*
Lady for a Night~He’s not the lead in this one; Joan Blondell is. He’s more in the background, and he seems relaxed and jovial, very different from his usual roles.
Rio Bravo~Much is made of his matchups with Maureen O’Hara, but he and Angie Dickinson have chemistry in this film! He’s actually sexy in it! They have some very playful scenes, with dialogue that is quite spicy. The film was intended as a response to “High Noon”, and it succeeds there. Victory is achieved when the sheriff is helped by the sort of people that Gary Cooper’s sheriff turns down in the classic Western.
The War Wagon~I admit that the real draw is Robert Walker, Jr., but this is a great adventure.
