Was JOHN WAYNE (the actor) a bigot and racist?

Looking for specific documentation (sources) that may back up the charge that he was a bigot, I have read the Playboy article dealing with his comments on Native-Americans. PLEASE point be to reliable sources dealing with his views on race, religion, and possible prejudiced opinions.
PLEASE send references, sources, sites that I can use. Personal opinions are nice but, I would like to prove or disprove the charge that John Wayne was a bigot and a racist. Telling me he was a product of the 1940’s, 1950’s, 1960’s, & 1970’s is not helpful in coming up with good solid material.
All answers are appreciated.

He had his moments (I recall reading about a Playboy interview where he said some fairly shocking (by today’s standards) stuff). John M was right on the spot pointing out The Searchers. This was an excellent example of courageous movie making. His character (Ethan Edwards) was blindingly racist and, for the most part, downright evil. No one today would dare take on that kind of a role for fear of instant blacklisting.
