Wire Binding Machines are one of the most popular choices today for binding documents and reports. Wire binding has been a staple in offices for years and lends itself to a professional, finished look. We find it many times in professional offices. I think that’s because of the metal wire binding edge, it adds a sense of value and a richness to the document and the square hole punch that the wire punch makes is so different from other types of binding.

Wire binding is also called Wire-O binding, twin loop wire binding and double loop wire binding. These all refer to the same type of machine.

Like other systems, wire binds have two different pitches. There is the 2:1 pitch that represents two punches per inch and the 3:1 pitch, which obviously, has three punches per inch. For larger documents the 2:1 is preferred and it offers 3/16″ to 1 1/4″ spine sizes. For smaller reports 3:1is preferred and it ranges from 3/16″ to 9/16″ spine sizes. It is best to decide up front your report size, as most machines only offer one pitch.

These binding machines are available with manual punching and closing mechanism, fully electric components, or a combination of both electric punching and manual closing. You can pick which best fits your production levels and budget.

Supplies for wire binding come in a variety of colors. Most wire spines come in black, white, silver, bronze and gray but there are also red, blue, green, navy available. The spines are manufactured in a C shape and the closing mechanism closes the C into an O shape to secure the pages. It’s a smart idea to place the back cover against the front cover when binding so the wire spine is concealed inside the back cover when finished. It will look tidier that way. These documents will rotate 360 degrees and lay flat also.

Wire binding machines make for a high end looking proposal. If you are a Realtor, engineer or architect, this is the binding style for you.
