True Grit (1969) with John Wayne?
Can someone tell me some the the outdated masculine characteristics Rooster Cogburn displays in this film?

I don’t know what you mean either! Rooster Cogburn had to be the way he was to survive at that time! But, you’d probably find plenty of men just like him now, and they likely work dangerous jobs, too.
Probably, it has as much to do with testosterone levels as anything. And, those levels certainly don’t seem to have changed.
Rooster is cocky, brave, foolhardy at times, tough, gentle when necessary, and semi-ambitious, with a fair sense of humor. So, what do you want to change about him? He locks horns with Maddy, but he obviously ends up admiring her for her tenaciousness, which is just as “bulldog” as his own.
Maddy has many of Rooster’s characteristics, so they’re certainly not only masculine traits, are they? I’m sure that you’ll find plenty of Maddy types nowadays, thus those characteristics are here to stay, whether in males or females.
