As soon I got home right after seeing the fantastic film Jumper, I immediately turned on my computer, went on to Google, and typed “The North Face backpack Hayden Christensen used in Jumper”. I am like that, you see; if I decided that this item I saw in a movie or TV show is “cool”, I would have to get one for myself. That’s how obsessive I am about the online deals I have been making for a time now. Needless to say, pop culture dictates that behavior. And that’s how I’ve come to buy a black bag that I may never really use for any kind of purpose –other than for display, of course.
Remember that “flash thingie” that Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith had used in Men in Black to wipe the memories off of people? That is what started it. I thought it was such a must-have that I spent a couple of weeks looking for online merchandise stores that sold the item. I got a very good replica of the item for less than five bucks. Ever since then I have been on the look out for cheap collectibles that have, in one way or another, a reference to pop culture.
Let’s see what online deals I have made recently for my memorabilia collection. Yesterday, a packaged arrived for me containing a movie prop from an old John Wayne western (I was so surprised that no one else would buy it), plus the remote control car that was used in Ocean’s Eleven. And last week I bought a guitar pick that was once used by David Cook on American Idol; I also purchased my second Anakin Skywalker light saber from eBay. And at a bargain price, too! Right now, though, I am scouring blogs, forums, and buy-and-sell websites for any Batman merchandise on which I can get my hands.
All this is certainly a personal quirk. I spend hours and hours every single day at my computer desk looking for a particular item for sale. But you know what? After making the rounds on the Internet I have found communities around the world who do the same thing, who pay to get for themselves the stuff that movie stars have worn and touched and used in a movie set. (That’s how I know I’m not that weird.) I have made friends with some of them and struck up a camaraderie, and we exchange insider tips whenever we catch each other online.
Tomorrow I am off to see the latest Mummy movie starring Brendan Fraser, which got good reviews but did not really do so well in the box office. No matter. I’ll still be sure to keep a keen eye on the details of the scenes. And while some people might mistake me for a production critic, I really am just a regular guy – with a passion for the coolest items of our time, and the dedication to getting the best online deals on them.

Hondo (Full Screen) $2.88 Although scarcely seen in its original 3-D, and entirely out of sight for a decade and a half after its producer-star died, Hondo has maintained a high rep among John Wayne fans–and it wasn’t even directed by Howard Hawks or John Ford. (Actually, Ford did shoot some second-unit stuff while visiting Wayne on location.) Half-breed Hondo, companioned only by an antisocial dog, tends to be more sympa… |

The Wild West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection $14.81 This grandly conceived two-disc collection of Hollywood and television Western themes showcases the City of Prague Philharmonic’s indefatigable passion for rehashing great works from composers like Max Steiner, Dimitri Tiomkin, and John Williams. But listeners less prone to swoon over highbrow symphonic grandeur may respond with a yawn. Yes, the collection is a wonderful reference source, with a s… |

My Rifle, My Pony and Me (Western Movies Songs) $16.01 There is astonishingly little overlap between this 26-song collection, consisting of songs from various western movie and television soundtracks, and other, rival domestic releases. As usual, Bear Family has done its best to gather together the best and most unusual of this material — a promotional-only single of Ricky Nelson and Dean Martin singing “My Rifle, My Pony and Me” from Rio Bravo (adap… |

True Grit $7.98 A 14-year-old girl needs a man with “true grit” to help her bring in the fugitive who killed her father. That she settles on Rooster Cogburn–a one-eyed, booze-soaked, potbellied U.S. marshal on the downward curve of his career in law enforcement–is the glorious springboard for all versions of True Grit: the Charles Portis novel, the 1969 western that won an Oscar for John Wayne, and the 2010 Coe… |

The Quiet Man (Collector’s Edition) $7.47 Blarney and bliss, mixed in equal proportions. John Wayne plays an American boxer who returns to the Emerald Isle, his native land. What he finds there is a fiery prospective spouse (Maureen O’Hara) and a country greener than any Ireland seen before or since–it’s no surprise The Quiet Man won an Oscar for cinematography. It also won an Oscar for John Ford’s direction, his fourth such award. The f… |

True Grit (Special Collector’s Edition) $7.72 A wonderful/rueful running gag in El Dorado involves the Edgar Allan Poe line “Ride, boldly ride” being mangled by toupee-wearer Wayne into “Ride, baldy, ride.” Two years later, in True Grit, Wayne put the joke in italics by donning an eyepatch and several inches of girth to play cantankerous territorial marshal Rooster Cogburn. Critics belatedly noticed that he could be a marvelously entertaining… |
